THE STORY BEHIND #SHARETHEPLATFORM
IT ALWAYS STARTS WITH AN IDEA…
…and that idea was brought to One Love Australia by a dynamic individual in Priyanka Ashraf. She had seen the interview between actress Emma Watson and author and journalist Reni Eddo-Lodge back in 2018 and was inspired by the success of this allyship model to engage people of all races in the antiracism dialogue. Identifying an opportunity to repeat and expand this model in Australia, she reached out to the One Love Australia team. After talking through some concepts and ideas, we decided to work together on the campaign. We developed the strategy, networks and content creation skills to amplify the campaign to be what it is today. Initiatives like #ShareThePlatform are designed to build awareness and start conversations about racism - and conversations are the first step in learning what constitutes meaningful change.
long days, late nights…
We started work on the campaign in June 2020, in the midst of a global pandemic that was causing a lot of uncertainty. The whole campaign was essentially coordinated via Zoom - not just the interviews, but all the associated planning too. We got our first major breakthrough via one of One Love Australia’s previous partners in Canva, who offered up their Chief Evangelist Guy Kawasaki for an interview. The campaign continued to grow momentum as we went into overdrive bringing on influencers, founders and organisations to support it. We can’t really continue on here without mentioning the incredible help we received along the way from organisations like ygap, Creative Cubes as well as social media and content partners like Opyl and Social Brew - your input has been invaluable and continued to drive this cause forward.
the campaign launches…
Roughly a month and a half after inception we were all excited at the prospect of the campaign launch. Raising awareness for black, indigenous and people of colour founders and businesses is an important step in learning about the struggles they’ve faced that many other business owners do not. We hope that #ShareThePlatform brings some of those issues to the fore, and from those conversations we can achieve meaningful change in the future.
